Ghastly in Name but not Nature:
Why ‘ghastly’ – well we like this 14th century Middle English adjective because it has come to have a meaning less dire than its origins. From gast or ghost ghastly once meant to terrify to death or worse. The more lurid of ghastly’s original meanings such as ‘filled by fear’ and ‘like a ghost’ have now passed into obscurity or obsolescence. Nowadays its informal meaning is more jocular often suggesting grossness rather than gruesomeness as in ‘our ghastly weather’ or ‘your ghastly shirt’.
